to Arca information Technical Details for ARCA Europa 530
Please note these details ONLY apply to the Europa '530'; the Europa '610' and later Arca motorhomes used different chassis and engines. It is also worth taking the 'old' unit when purchasing a replacement as there may be variations from the units on my own vehicle.
I'm listing on this page the replaceable items about which I have acquired knowledge through maintaining my Arca myself. There is no warranty attached to this information though it is correct to the best of my knowledge.
Note: although the rear chassis extension and the rear axle is made by Al-Ko I have found the UK branch of this maker singularly unhelpful when trying to source parts.
The best source I know for all Peugeot parts is Dean Hunter at Brotherton, West Yorkshire telephone 01977-677887

| Chassis Part | Description | Part Number(s) | Source |
Chassis |
The front chassis is a Peugeot J9, similar to the Peugeot J7 but with engine and brake differences. This vehicle is still in production in Turkey as the 'Peugeot J9 Karsen' minibus, in medium and long-wheelbase versions with 2.5 diesel engines! | ||
| The chassis extension is made by Al-Ko Kober, in galvanised steel and aluminium, with a 'B1600kg.' axle which uses a fully independent rubber torsion bar springing system. The rear track is wider than the front track | |||
| Engine | Peugeot XD2PS, turbocharged OHV 2304cc; the Haynes manual is part no.1607 | ||
| This engine was also used in some Peugeot 505 and 604 passenger cars, but certain details may differ, notably the sump and the arrangement of the exhaust system. Later Peugeot cars in the 505 and 604 series used an XD3 or XD3T engine, which may also be suitable for fitting in a Europa 530. This was a 2.5 litre version of the same basic engine. | |||
| There are engines from other vehicles which should be suitable: the most likely is the Peugeot-engined LDV Convoy light commercial vehicle, which used a 2.5 litre variant of the OHV Peugeot engine. Some are turbocharged but by no means all. | |||
| Oil Filter | I use Comma 'Eurodiesel' Oil, API.CD/15-40; filter thread is M20x1.5 but this may vary according to engine: best take old filter for a match. Some filters are taller than others | I use FRAM PH2897A | Motaquip VFL204, Purflux LS105 or LS867B |
| Sump Plug: a 16mm copper ring is recommended for replacement at each oil change. | |||
| Fuel Filter | check make and type: these numbers refer to pre-1984 Purflux glass bowl type filter. The correct number for the top rubber flanged seal is Peugeot 1912.06 | Purflux C112 or Lucas HDF505 | Peugeot 1906.02 |
| Glow Plugs | Champion CH63/CH87 or Marchal 301/304 | Diesel Injection specialist | |
| Cooling Fan Drive Belt | |||
| Vacuum Pump | check oil level very occasionally through large bolt head on rear of pump body - fill to just overflowing with thin engine oil SAE10-40; this refers only to Pierburg type, which has a flat top secured with machine screws. A knocking sound from this component indicates that it has lost its oil and could stop working, resulting in vastly increased braking resistance and much longer braking distance! | Peugeot 4563.13 | |
| Drive Belt for Vacuum Pump | Mintex PWFT675; 675x10mm | ||
| Air Filter | this is a 30cm. long foam sponge element which can be cleaned and re-used a number of times. It comes from the 505 GRD/SRDT, 604 D Turbo/GTDT/SRDT and Talbot Tagora: I have not found an alternative aftermarket type. | Peugeot 1445.75 | |
| Gearbox | The gearbox appears unique to the Peugeot J7 and J9 LCVs. A 4-speed unit is standard but a 5-speed unit was available. The 5-speed unit gives a much lower ratio top gear, leading to more relaxed cruising speeds. It does change the speedometer reading due to a different drive cog speed. | Secondhand units from France | |
| Oil: EP80W/90 of good make: fill through side plug until oil just runs out - about 4.5 litres. Check drive shaft outlet seals for leakage. | |||
| Braking System | A mixture of Bendix and ATE manufacture: Front brakes are Disc with Bendix 2-pot calipers of a 'floating' design; Rear brakes are ATE drums with ATE wheel cylinders. There is no compensating valve for the rear brakes. Peugeot J7 vehicles mostly used drum brakes front & rear: parts are not likely to be interchangeable with the J9 apart from any J7s with disc front brakes. | UK motor factors and braking specialists; or from France | |
| Front Brake Pads: check the maximum gap between machined face of the caliper and the actuating pistons when fully wound back into the cylinder. It appears that a change in brake equipment took place during 1985 and later type pads are thicker. This change seems to have coincided with introduction of a pad wear indicator wire attached to the inner pad. | Lockheed LP0588 or 0589; Mintex MDB1479 for later type - MDB1086 for earlier type; Peugeot 4245.74 | Brake Factors | |
| Front Brake Disc, 280mm.diameter | EBC no.D158; or Rossini ROS581 but listed price for these is far higher | ||
| Rear Brake Shoes (ATE brake drums) | marked '351246' | Re-lining service | |
| Brake principal (master) cylinder, integrated with vacuum servo | |||
| Front Brake Cylinders, 2 each side: these are individual Bendix items specific to the LH or RH side of the vehicle and to Upper or Lower position in the caliper. Look after them as they are very expensive to replace. Fitting the wrong one will prevent the handbrake working! The Handbrake Cables should have a concertina rubber gaiter fitted between the two actuating levers. | The individual cylinders can be removed and re-conditioned with special tools | Peugeot part specialists and parts importers - someone with access to the Factory microfiche! | |
| Front Brake Cylinder Repair Kit of rubber parts - does 1 only | Peugeot 4448.31 | ||
| Rear Brake Cylinders: these are ATE manufacture and again appear (almost) exclusive to the J9. I have only been able to source them in Germany. VW use ATE products extensively but a UK VW specialist was unable to match the cylinder spec. Look after them! | ATE 03.3225-0365.308 | www.contiteves-am.com or search for 'ATE Bremsen'; Germany, possibly France | |
| Rear Brake shoe retaining springs: vital to keep the rear shoes in place! They rust so dip in an anti-rust paint when replacing them. | Burdens 505036 (via a motorhome dealer) | ||
| Clutch | Principal (master) Cylinder: repair kits of the rubber parts are available | Bendix701001B | |
| Actuating (slave) cylinder: repair kits of the rubber parts are available | Lucas SP4595 | ||
| Steering | Steering Box is a Gemmer Worm & Roller design. I have only found it necessary to top up the oil - to the level of the red plastic plug - infrequently. Malfunction will indicate need for complete overhaul | ||
| Suspension | Front: concentric Coil Spring/Shock Absorber with Upper wishbone and Lower triangle control arms | Monroe 'Van Magnum' V4202 | or Peugeot 9353003280 |
| Rear: Rubber Torsion Bar axle of Al-Ko manufacture 'B1600kg'. No maintenance possible | |||
| Tyres: on my Arca they are Michelin XCA75 19R400, a metric size and now almost unobtainable. Other owners have fitted 16" size tyres with no apparent problems. Whatever is fitted they must be 'C' type and circumference (revolutions per mile) is important to maintain speedometer within limits. Michelin Agilis 205/75-16 are a very close match. | Pressure Front 4.2bar/62psi; Rear
2.8bar/42psi
|
||
| Lighting and Electrical | Outer Main + Dip, H4 bulb | Carello 624 | |
| Inner Mainbeam, H1 bulb | Carello 623 | ||
| I have found it impossible to source these lights in UK, but similar (or identical) units are used in many PSV coaches from 1980s to mid-1990s. Isuzu NKR LCV units are also similar | |||
| Alternator, standard unit is nominal 50A with built-in voltage regulator | Paris-Rhone (Valeo) A13N32 | Drive Belt 900x10mm | |
| Rear light cluster: I am informed that these come from a Peugeot J5 Pickup truck. Bulbs are prone to seize in their holders. | |||
| Servicing | I have pages from Factory Workshop Manuals for most procedures of Peugeot service and parts replacement | ||
